Self-realisation and resilience through meditation: A lifestyle-based framework for preventive healthcare
Abstract
Chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and obesity continue to place a profound burden on global health systems. Mounting evidence suggests that lifestyle interventions—particularly those emphasizing mental balance, self-awareness, and stress regulation—play a pivotal role in disease prevention and long-term well-being. This presentation draws upon research exploring the impact of Sahaja Yoga meditation, offering new insights into integrative, preventive approaches in primary healthcare. Findings indicate that regular engagement in meditative practices fosters emotional regulation, strengthens identity development, and enhances adaptive coping—all key protective factors against stress-induced chronic diseases. Self-realisation, as experienced through Sahaja Yoga, cultivates inner balance and “thoughtless awareness,” leading to improved decision-making, reduced reactivity, and healthier lifestyle choices. These attributes align with the principles of preventive medicine by addressing health at its root—supporting individuals before illness manifests. By integrating structured meditation and self-reflective practices into community-based primary care programs, we can empower individuals to adopt sustainable health behaviours and strengthen psychological resilience. This model can complement existing public health strategies by reducing long-term healthcare costs and enhancing community wellbeing. The presentation advocates for policy and practice shifts toward holistic lifestyle-based interventions as critical pillars of modern preventive care.
