Title: Open Defecation-Free Communication Interventions and Contextual Dynamics in the South-South Region of Nigeria: A Case for Unified Intervention Approaches

Abstract

Open defecation (OD) practice in the South-south region of Nigeria continues to constitute significant threat to public health despite decades of open defecation-free (ODF) interventions. Studies have attributed the prevalence of this sanitary practice largely to the region’s peculiar contextual dynamics among other factors. How these factors alongside popular intervention approaches combine to render ineffective efforts aimed at sustainably attaining open defecation-free (ODF) status for the region is yet to be fully understood and appreciated. Therefore, the study’s main objective is to investigate how contextual dynamics impacts response to open defecation-free interventions, effectiveness of ODF communication intervention and explore suitable approaches to sustainably rid the region of OD.  The study deploys qualitative research design. Specifically, the study uses extensive literature review of studies within the region to understand in-depth the issues impacting ODF. It also uses empirical approaches such as the key informant interview (KII) to generate new tangents that can be leveraged to productively navigate the region. Results, conclusions and recommendations will be provided when the study is concluded.
