Presentation Title:

Surviving TBI Twice

Abstract

I will speak about my two experiences with traumatic brain injury. In 1993, a woman drove into me from behind as I was walking across the street (with the walk sign!). I had two brain surgeries, and wasn’t expected to live or work again. I did. By 2016 I was a chaired professor of law. Then a young stranger attacked me, throwing me to the ground and leaving me bleeding from my head on the street. I survived that attempted murder. These are not events anyone would want to go through. But you can survive them.

I am still a law professor, teaching, writing, and thinking. I will tell you about the accident and the attack, my recoveries, and how I learned to take care of my brain. Use it or lose it. I have written about these brain injuries several times.I am fortunate to have a chapter in the forthcoming book, Traumatic Brain Injury: Challenges, editors Dr. Ioannis Mavroudis and Dr. Alin Ciobica, https://www.intechopen.com/online-first/1179800, and will use that writing as background for my talk at the Primary Healthcare and Medicare Summit in Thailand.
