Presentation Title:

Beyond glycemic control: A modern approach to type 2 diabetes management in primary care

Abstract

Background: The management of type 2 diabetes has evolved significantly beyond traditional glucose-centered approaches. Current evidence emphasizes individualized treatment strategies that address not only glycemic control but also cardiovascular risk, kidney protection, obesity, and overall metabolic health.

Objective: This lecture aims to provide primary healthcare professionals with a practical and updated approach to the management of type 2 diabetes, focusing on individualized therapeutic decisions and the integration of cardiovascular, renal, and weight-management strategies into routine clinical practice.

Content: The session will discuss contemporary treatment approaches for type 2 diabetes, including the appropriate use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors, and other glucose-lowering therapies. Special emphasis will be placed on identifying patients who may benefit from therapies with cardiovascular and renal protective effects, addressing obesity as an integral component of diabetes management, and tailoring treatment according to individual patient characteristics and comorbidities. Practical clinical scenarios will be used to translate current recommendations into everyday primary care practice.

Conclusion: Modern diabetes care requires moving beyond HbA1c targets toward a comprehensive, patient-centered strategy. Primary healthcare professionals have a pivotal role in early intervention and in reducing the long-term cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic complications of type 2 diabetes.
