Presentation Title:

Preference of home and community care by older persons in developing nations

Abstract

A successful and sustainable eldercare system must not only be safe and qualitative but must be culturally acceptable, accessible, affordable, and preferred by the older persons themselves as well as their significant others. This work indicates that long-term care (LTC) of older persons at home, in the community and primary healthcare settings is not only preferred by most elders and families in developing nations but is also cost-effective and easy to integrate into already available care structures. The presentation and analysis of key findings from studies in developing and emerging economies that indicate the long-term care preferences of older persons are highlighted in this work. The countries include: Nigeria, Eastern African countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Vietnam, Latin America and the Caribbeans, and a few communities in China. The year of studies, specific knowledge gained and key lessons are included. The recommendations for consideration are the design of eldercare policies that support integration of care of older persons into the home and community care structures, strengthening of the primary healthcare system, capacity development of care providers such as gerontology nurses, personal support workers, social care workers, recreational therapists, refocusing of the healthcare system towards health protection and promotion, disease prevention and healthy ageing along the life course.
