Beyond HbA1c: Comprehensive Type 2 Diabetes Care in Primary Practice
Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes management has shifted from a predominantly glucose-focused model toward a broader, person-centered approach. Contemporary care requires clinicians to consider cardiovascular and kidney risk, excess weight, comorbidities, and overall metabolic health alongside glycemic targets.
Objective: This session is designed to equip primary care clinicians with a practical framework for individualized type 2 diabetes management, incorporating glycemic goals with cardiovascular risk reduction, kidney protection, and effective weight-management strategies.
Content: The presentation will review how current glucose-lowering therapies can be selected according to individual clinical priorities. It will address the role of GLP-1 receptor agonists, dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors, and other treatment options, with particular attention to patients who may gain cardiovascular or renal benefit. Obesity will be considered an important component of diabetes care, and treatment choices will be linked to patient characteristics, comorbidities, and therapeutic goals. Case-based examples will demonstrate how these principles can be applied in day-to-day primary care.
Conclusion: Effective type 2 diabetes care extends beyond achieving a target HbA1c. A comprehensive and individualized strategy can help primary care clinicians address glycemia, weight, cardiovascular risk, and kidney health together, supporting earlier intervention and reducing long-term complications.
